A fashionable 'bob' was called bob cut by the old fashioned, enoondre? type ladice of the Bangalore of yore. Place a foot just one step lower, & you'd hear a 'bob' referred to as boff cut.

Which I think should be declared the right way to say it.

Usage

Daddy: Molu, boff cut and all is for fast girls. Homely girls should put kawkanut oil & plait their hairs. Goat it?
Me: Nawdadall.

Middle class Indian kids of the '70s & '80s heard this phrase so often from their parents, their ears just shriveled up & fell off.

Usually serves as a good start to a severe finger-waggin' lecture; works great as its culmination too. Especially if you made the mistake of confessing that you lost your pencil/ eraser/ waterbottle/white shoes/name badge in school.

And *shuddderrr*. God help you if you say you want to BUY something. Yabba!

Usage

Gautam: Ma, i need new shoes. Mine are small for me..
Mom: Money doesnt grow on trees
Gautam: ..and my Lekhak notebook is over..
Dad: Money doesnt grow on trees
Gautam: ...my uniform is 2 sizes small for me...
Mom: Money doesnt grow on trees
Gautam: Pay my school fees!
Dad: Money doesnt grow on trees
Gautam: ...im hungry, can I have my dinner?
Mom: Money doesnt grow on trees

And so on...

'Mai' is Kannada for 'body'. 'yella' is 'and all'. 'Jumm' would be goosebumps. So mai + yella + jumm is Kannada for 'body and all goosebumps'. Only, the goosebumps here need not be limited to music. Some people get when they listen to Yecchdee Deve Gowda's speech also.

Usage

Deve Gowda: Naanu...mannina maga. In our house we are sleeping on floor & taking ragi muddhe night and day, day and night. Aadrebutt I am aalso lauing sushi-geeshi and all. Swalpa global aagbekalva? Aan? Dharefore vote for me, vote for me, vote for me!!
(I am son of the soil. Daiily in our house we are taking ragi muddhes. But I am also lauing sushi-geeshi and all. Must become little global also no? So vote for me, vote for me, vote for me!!)
Savithamma (in the audience) to Sumithra: Ushooooo, whatta speech kane Sumithra! Maiyella jumm aagthayide!

First of all, Next of all makes no sense whatsoever. But then, what Im telling to you is, Indian English is less about talking like the 'Qyoo for Qyoooon', as much as it is about direct translations from regional languages to enhance the understandment of the front-standing person.

Usage

Next of all is what follows First of all.

Any rebuttal worth it's salt in India mustinshould begin with a lawyerly first of all...

An outsider may be forgiven for thinking it denotes the sayer's clarity of thought & organised mind, but its no such thing. We're just buying time by talking bullshit.

Also: if youre from Karnataka, please say 'First af aalu'. Gives it a regional flavour. And if its an auto driver youre debating with, he'll think youre a local. (Thats all. He'll think. But he'll still charge you extra. Dont have such high hopes & all!)

Usage

Mom: What time does the school bus drop Pappu everyday? Its 1 O'clock & he should have been here by now...
Dad: (in superior tone) First of all, it isnt the *school bus* that drops Pappu home, its the *driver* of the bus. Next of all, whatever time it is, hes not a baby anymore & doesnt need your constant molly-coddling & worrying about his comings & goings!
Mom (with naughty grin): Stop acting like the grandson of Wren & Martin! Don't have any clue what time he comes, do you?? Huh?

''Yaav devasthana?'' is Kannada for ''Which temple?'' This is pretty much standard greeting in old-Bangalore zones such as Subramanyanagar, Rajajinagar & JP Nagar by the area boys, for a local who turns up in new footwear.

A temple is typically the place where Hindus remove their footwear to go in and pray...and come out to find their footwear missing! So the implication of yaav devasthana? is ''Which temple did you flick these shoes from??''

(Word suggestion & definition courtesy - Kiran N.)

Usage

Kiran: *fullly posing in Rajasthan photo (on fb) with byoodiful wife, one foot resting one thara coolly on flowerpot, sole intention being to show off pointy new cowboy boots*
LNR: Nice shoes Kirana. Yaav devasthana?
Kiran: Pushkar Mela kano. Thousands of them lying around, which to take which to leave antha confusion agoyithappa!

Red monster buses that shove their way honking & screaming through the streets of Bangalore. 'Screaming' is what the conductor does, not the bus - stuffs his frustrated head out of the window & screams at everyone to gedddddoutt of his way!!!

Faithful followers of Shri Shri IST. Also available in dabbal-decker format.

Usage

Bangalore guide: *pointing to a dirty, crowded BTS bus with the conductor hanging out of the door, screeeeming at the public to gedddout of it's way. At the same time turning around to screeeem at the lumpen element standing & pinching bottoms in the ladice section* Aaawwwwwwwww...how cute they are, our BTS buses! Theyve been messing with our lives for so long now, Bangaloreans tend to feel a deep lau & affection for them.
Gora fellow: *incredulously* Really?? Why??????
Bangalore guide: because the sky is so high, and your grandfather told a lie, in 1925.
