Definition

The mecca that isn't Mecca, the must-go mainstay of mobile Malyalis meaning to make their mark. The term references the Gulf - Persian, Arabian, call it what you will - but refers most commonly to Dubai, and in recent years, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi. Typically referred to with a mixture of pride and nausea, the gelf is a place where fortunes are made from taxes unpaid, and said fortune is then used to build a horrendously ugly giant pink-and-green house in Cochin. Muls flock to the Middle East in search of easy money and the high life, aided by a vast phalanx of engles (see engle in the gelf) spread across the region in a variety of taxi businesses, Kerala Paragon restaurants, fake watch shops, cellphone and electronics stores, and laundromats.
