pao comes from the portuguese word for bread....i'm half a pao (Mangalorean catholic) so i know :) also it has nothing to do with invoking the good lord's help as you have described.

Usage

has come to be identified with catholics/christians beyond bandra...mainly because catholics/christians from across communities eat 'pao' or bread...
