Before the advent of liberalization and New India and - people usually looked for jobs for life and joined safe jobs like government (gorement job), LIC, State Bank of India etc. Those were referred to in marriage market and general society as "permanent jobs". Having a permanent job was a social asset.


Mother to her modern liberal college age daughter:
"I dont mind if you want to marry anyone as long as they are from same community, same caste but different gothram boy, earning well and having permanent job"
