At any Goan bakery, the oft-chanted mantra is - "maka pao dhya" (Gimme some pao bread)...Goans carried the same to Bombay, out of sheer habit, asking the baker to give them the pao-bread! Over time, it first shortened itself to makapao and then to Mac/ Mak, denoting a Goan Christian usually.
