While it is widely believed that these systems developed during the cold war era,the genesis of such systems could well be in male dominated , polygamous feudal societies.

Elite males in these societies while never faced with a scarcity of females did have reservations about being interrupted by unwanted intrusions when in the company of their " at that moment " favorite female .

Ingenuity threw up the adorning of the ankles of all such favourite females with anklets (payals) that made a jingling sound when the wearer moved, sufficient to alert the male of an impending intruder.

A : Ravi's wife's anklets jingle a bit too much!
B : For him, its a good early warning system !
