Sensex is a portmanteau of sensitive and index and is the name of the Bombay stock exchange. It was coined in 1989 by IIT grad Deepak Mohoni. Urban legend has it that someone challenged him to inject the word "sex" into technical financial analyst reports and he figured he would call the whole market index SENSEX.
