The ultimate door to door recyclers. These enterprising souls push thelas or pedal in cities and neighborhoods, yelling Raddi, Paper, Botal in a pitch that would be the envy of Nusrat Fateh Ali. Middle-class families in India known for their careful ways hoard newspapers, bottles, and old clothes waiting for the occasion when the panhandler pays their street a visit. The visit occurs mid-day, when the mahila of the house will have finished her chores and be ready for the occasion, whence the months' supply of newspapers will be bundled, tied up in a sutli, and handed over for the ceremonial weighing. After a good bit of haggling over the price and the actual weight, a few rupees exchange hands and the money is usually tucked into the blouse, or kept in the almirah. With so much of loose paper and bottles strewn all over the streets, it is a wonder these panhandlers make the effort to go door to door buying Raddi, Paper, Botal. Nevertheless, they are an Indian institution, and keep tonnes of trash off the street and into recycling systems.

Legendary weekly countdown program aired on Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Ceylon before the name change) on Wednesday nights from 8-9 pm between 1952-1988, then on AIR through 1994. The announcer always stated prior to the show, yeh sri lanka broadcasting coropration ka videsh vibhaag hai, unnees, pacchees, ekattees aur iktalees meter band par. Aur ab prastut hai, Binaca Geetmaala. It was possibly the longest running weekly show ever in India. It was sponsored by Ciba-Geigy, maker of Binaca toothpaste. Listened to by millions. Hosted by arguably the greatest RJ ever, the dulcet voiced Amin Sayani, it was keenly followed over the entire Indian subcontinent. The weekly show consisted of about 16 songs which made the list based on album sales, write-ins to the station by Shrota-sanghs and the number of farmaaishes on radio. The most popular song of the year acquired legendary status. A stroll in the streets on Wednesday nights would be filled with strains of the Geetmala songs playing on Paanshop transistor radios, in restaurants, at assorted stores and homes as people were glued to their sets. Popular songs would ascend the ladder called paidaan until they made the final list, at which point the song was heralded by bugles, called Bigul. Such a show is unlikely to ever be repeated on Indian radio.

Usage

Chocobar ice cream

Definition

Frozen delicacy sold by pushcart ice cream wallahs and in kiosks. Hawked in a loud voice "CHAAKOBAAR PISTOBAAR ICECREEEEM" brings grubby kids rushing to the vendor. Called chocolate ice cream or chocolate popsickle elsewhere, it is a waxy layer of chocolate covering a lot of air with some vanilla flavored ice cream underneath. When eaten in the hot summers, the darned thing melts and trickles over your wrist before you can fully unwrap it and the sticky mess winds it way to the elbow when raising your hand to give the bar a lick. Must say it is a cute sight to see little kids with dried chocolate around the mouth after an encounter with chaakobaar icecream. Hard to clean up after an eat as water is usually in scarce supply in the vicinity. Enjoy.

Ah, one longs for those simpler times before TV destroyed all other forms of home entertainment. Ludo was the most popular board game along with Snakes and Ladders. Endless summer hours were spent with cousins eating alphonso mangoes and rolling a pair of dice while moving your coins on a brightly colored cardboard till all your coins reached "home". Friendly fights over who won were the usual way the games ended. Ironically, this game originated in India as Pachisi, a board game invented in the 6th century and played by the Mughals. The game went to the UK in the 19th century and came back to India renamed as Ludo.

Usage

I rolled two sixes and won Ludo. Hey hey, ha ha.

Miracle springloaded handheld contraption advertised in all major magazines in the pre health-club days of 70s and 80s. Guaranteed to transform 5 foot 4 inch matchstick males into 6 foot hulksters, or so the fantasy went. Just use for 14 days and see the amazing results was the tag line. Cost Rs. 100 (which was a lot in those days). There were two kinds of kids, those whose parents bought them a bullworker and those who wished their parents did. Most kids could barely move the the telescoping tubes an inch or two, so the primary purpose was to impress friends and girls in the neighborhood.

Usage

Guddu ne bullworker khareed liya hai. Ab dekh kaisi baadi banaayega.

I totally remember Bullworker! My cousin actually used it. It was also called a "chest expander." Classic word. I found a picture and added it off :)
