Im a Tam Bram who grew up in Calcutta, brought up by hard core tam parents who were born and brought up in Calcutta as well. Having been away from Tamil Nadu for three generations, the tamil we spoke (and still speak) at home has watered down quite a bit, with a number of curious words/short forms/anglicizations evolving over the years. WIth no tamil speaking friends around in Cal, Sun TV is usually the only source to verify whether some words we know as Tamil really ARE part of the language or just a figment of my family's collective imagination!
