SRI

4 3
0

Definition

If you hear the word SIRI long enough, it takes on an inexplicable Indian quality. We think this is because it sounds like Sri. Sri is like "Mr." in India and also a common epithet for Gods (eg. Sri Devi is the name for Goddess Lakshmi). We have decided that the desi version of SIRI should be Sri.

May not be the demure female personal assistant that apple dreamed up for the new iphone. But probably a richer character akin to Loganathan where his level of support for your mundane tasks will be a function of how many bondas he has belted for lunch.

Usage

Have you heard of SRI? Its like SIRI but better.

Traditional Indian fluid measure. Its a cylindrical measure without any handle or a spout, comes in SS, tin, brass etc.
A ser equals approx a little over 2 liters.

A ser has companions in its fraction measures: 'half ser', 'pav', 'chatak' etc. 'Pav' and 'Ser' are the preferred measures in most South Indian Kitchens even today to measure out rice and urad dal to make idli or dosa batter.

Although it has lost any official recognition just like anna, mile etc., it is still used by most small farmers for their own use to measure produce before storing, by professional cooks in choultry kitchens.

Saree is an unusually long chunk of fabric Indian women like to drape around themselves. No one has measured its length yet, but it varies from a few meters to infinity in a rape scene depicted in bollywood movies.
The saree can be used to provide shelter to an underprivileged family, it can also hide baby bumps and sagging tummies. When worn in summer the temperature inside it can rise to 50 degrees thus making it a very able alternative for an incubationary.
Wearing wet saree or getting wet in a saree is not advisable for it is believed it encourages Indian males to do dirty dancing.

Usage

Woman:bhaiyya ek kilo saree dena.(give me one kilo saree, brother)

Sir.

But who you call Saar is a nuanced thing. It's a safe respectful designation without necessarily indicating hierarchy. If an implicit hierarchy is present, well and good, but when relative status is uncertain then Saar is a good bet.

It's not used in the familiar, like boss or hero. It may occasionally be used in reverse in an implicit hierarchy (i.e. high to low as opposed to the expected low to high) but this is terribly sarcastic and implies that some lowly bugger is about to get a tightslap if the sarcasm doesn't do the needful...

Usage

Coolie: "Ganapathi Saar, one mister from the telephone department is waiting."
Ganapathi (to long awaited technician): "Ah, hello saar, yesterday only you were supposed to come..."
Radhakrisha: "Saaaar what to do saar, staff only is not available these days, so much demand, we have been asking for more people but they are not giving"
Ganapathi: "Ok ok, you please start the work, I will get some tea."
Ganapathi (to coolie): "Hello! Saar! Are you going to bring some tea for saar or chumma stand there smiling?"
