Let the air come through.

A phrase used often in Bombay, a city of crowded trains, buses and streets. People jostle each other, step on each other's toes and are quite ready to argue and get their way. But before that, a gentle reminder - "Move over. Step aside for a bit. Let the air come through."

Best used when the spirit is low, with a bindaas, cheeky attitude.

Usage

Crowded train compartment. Atul, a pudgy accountant encounters Manish's hairy armpit right in the face. Unfortunately, the situation is severe enough for Atul to have no say in the matter. The train is jam-packed and he just cannot move. If it is any relief, at least Manish is wearing a cheap perfume. As soon as they reach the next major station on the Harbour Line, a large crowd of people leave the compartment.

For a moment, Atul is able to open his mouth.

Atul: Boss, thoda hawa aane de na... (Mister, please let the air come through)

Manish appreciates this, and steps away, but the next crowd has already come in, and Atul's face is immediately lodged in Nitin's armpit. This time, no perfume. Just pure unmitigated body odour.

Used, inter alia, in defense of lazy good for nothing boys whose waistlines slowly creep outwards, and in praise of marriageable ladice with child-bearing hips or newly-married ladice who have just come into post-marital chub. Can be inadvertently offensive (e.g., when the target has been dieting strenuously but without result, or when the implication is that in a past life you were practically a victim of famine).

Usage

1. Well-meaning aunty: Arre, Roohi, you are looking so healthy nowadays. First you used to look like a stick! But now in your sasuraal (in-laws' home) they must be feeding you so many asli-ghee mithais and all...
Roohi: (looks miffed)

2. Prospective mother-in-law: I simply cannot get my son married to that girl Samira -- he's so handsome, and look at her, she's like a baby elephant only!
Prospective m-i-l's nosy matchmaking friend: Come on, Preeti, she's just healthy; and she has such a nice personality also, very sweet girl, and makes excellent Marwari food!

HMT

5 2
Abbreviation.

Definition

Hegal Mel Towelu. A Kannada expression.
Its expansion is " Hegal or Hegalu=shoulder, Mel or Mele= atop, Towel(u)=Towel.
This version of HMT means a villager or a peasant, alluding to the fact that a villager in Karnataka is always seen and mentally visualized as having a towel thrown over his shoulder all the time.
If you act like a pagan, people will call you " Ley, HMT"

Incidentally and as always, slang-acronyms- this one included, are re-engineered forms of another well known acronym. In this case that well known acronym parodied was: HMT that stood for Hindustan Machine Tools, Bangalore, Pinjore, Kalmassery, Hyderabad, Srinagar etc.a mammoth of a public sector that made Machine tools, Watches, Bulbs, Bearings and more. It was highly regarded and economically successful for several decades until all pervading corruption, mismanagement, economic liberalization, extreme trade unionism and obsolescence brought it down just like many more great public sectors of the country.
This original HMT deserves our salute for producing a few generations of excellent engineers and technicians that have propelled manufacturing technology in India.

Usage

Ramswamy to the laid off HMT worker who went back to farming: Yeno Kariya, HMT bittamele HMT aagbittey!?
( What's the matter Kariya? You became an HMT after leaving HMT!?
