Seemingly a strong term used in general parlance to warn a person off doing something. It means exactly what it normally implies in English, no goodals here.

However. It's nuanced in that it applies to just about everything you would be well advised to steer clear of, however small and insignificant, however commonsensical... an air of gravity and wisdom pervades.

Usage

Krishna: I hau to go from Yelahanka to Sarjapura, what do you think, Ring Road is best no?
Ramu: What time are you going?
Krishna: 4 o'clock
Ramu: Mptch (wise lip smacking) Sssss (sharp intake of breath) ... (thoughtful pause) ... Better avoid.

OR

Shyamala: Thank you aunty, lunch was really amazing!
Aunty: No mention beti. But have some sweet.
Shyamala: No aunty, I'll avoid.

{NB: If Shyamala had not had the foresight to use the word "avoid", she would have been emotionally bludgeoned into consuming dessert before departing}

Aukaad does not have any equivalent word in English. Some justifiable synonyms would be: Level, standard, backing, guts. When the word aukaad comes in to play, it generally means that somebody's gonna get hurt real bad. The word directly attacks the person in question's ability to do something out of the ordinary. It could be a fist fight, a physically challenging task, quitting one's job, mimicking the boss behind his back in a meeting.

Usage

Stud- Aukaad kya hai teri, bhai?

(What's your aukaad, brother?)

Rick-shaw puller- tere baap se toh zada hi hai.

(Well, it's more than your father's).
*Hell breaks loose*

Ricky- Oye yaar, I can't eat another seekh roll now. I've already had about 16 of them. *dizzy*
Golu- Haha dikhadina aukaad saale.
(Haha, showed your little aukaad already?).
