For the slightly peckish, you can have a singil aamblate (made from one egg) and to satisfy a ravenous appetite, there is a doubil and even a tribil aamblate (yep, two or more egss) option! Deliciously yellow and soft, slightly crisp around the edges, you can have it plain or "speshal" - with chillies, onions and masala. Served with plain brudd or bruddost. Yummm! Also known as bruddaamblate or eggaamblate. So who cares if it has a mild newspaper and kerosene flavour! It never fails to hit the spot!

This is a word we will be hearing a lot in the near future. AADHAR means "support" and/or "foundation" and is the name for the ambitious project to give every Indian a unique 12 digit identifier based on fingerprint and biometric information. This is the kind of enthu cutlet project we love.
While it will be fraught with challenges, in a country where identity is always mediated through group associations (caste, religion etc.), this is the first attempt at viewing Indians as a collection of individuals. All types of Indians - from naughty indian uncles to sandra from bandras to sofa sadhus to tapori types will have an ID card. 2.4 billion eyes will be scanned.

Usage

Doctor Ram: Remove your soda buddi glasses I say and let me scan your iris...its for Aadhar. Don't be scared.

It simply means : You've spent twice as much as you've earned.

This Indian phrase was very popular in the first half of the previous century, but was lost to successive generations of Indians once the aanna was phased out. It was inevitably part of the sermon given to spendthrifts and compulsive shoppers who consistently refused to live within their means.

Today, it survives in the lexicons of many senior citizens, who often use it to lecture their spoilt grandchildren, not realising that eng persons today have no idea what an aanna is.

Trivia for all curious cats : 8 aannas or 'atthanni' is equal to half a rupee.

Usage

*Grandpa is scolding his teenage grandson for constantly asking for more money*

Grandpa : "You kids think money grows on trees!"

Grandson : "Oho Nanaji, relax. I just need a new cellphone. What's the big deal if Papa pays for it? I spent my pocket money on treating my friends this month. And last month my girlfriend wanted to see a movie in gold class."

Grandpa : "That's exactly your problem. Aamdani atthanni, kharcha rupaiya."

Grandson : "Eeeeh? Who is this atthanni now? Oho! She was one of your old girlfriends is it?" *winks knowingly*

Grandpa : "BESHARAM!"

Usage

*Small kids in Shimla in 1940's India are walking home from school, and they pass P. Samuel's Sweet Shop*

Small kids : "Eeeeeeey P. Samuel, ek goli-toffee free mein de na. Please please please." (P.Samuel, give one goli-toffee for free na. Please please please)

P. Samuel : "Nothing doing! I can't give you sweets everyday for free. You'll get five if you give me one aanna."

Small kids set up loud chorus : "But we don't have one aana. Please please please please please please please please."

Definition

Popular rhyme sung by little girls in Delhi when playing an intricate game of clapping. Somewhat nonsensical, but that's what it makes it so much fun.

The game always ends with the girls trying to thwack each other on the head, in time with the word 'Ganja', which means 'bald'. The first one to do it wins and walks away with a triumphant grin.

Normally played between two girls while others watch. A single mistake in either the clapping sequence or the wordings of the rhyme requires that the girl making the mistake stop and allow the next girl to try her hand at completing the rhyme flawlessly.

Usage

Wordings of the rhyme :

Aao melo shelo shaalo,
kachha dhaaga, race lagalo,

das pattey torrey,
ek patta kachha,
hiran ka bachha,

hiran gaya paani mein,
pakra uski nani ne,
naani ko lagi laat,
chal paree baarat,

baarat mein do bachey,
samose khao saste,
paani piyo thanda,
sarr pe maro danda,

sarr se nikla khoon,
karo telephoon,
telephoon mein taar nahi,
hum tumhare yaar nahi,

yaar gaye Dilli,
wahaan se laye billi,
billi ne maara panja,
dada go gaya GANJA!!!

*Ferocious head thwacking ensues*

Definition

Popular childhood nonsense rhyme. Spoof of the song of the same name from the Hindi film Jagriti (1954), which was originally intended to instill national pride into children in post-independance India.

The 1980's version was created by mischevious brats, who were euphoric after the iconic triumph of the Indian Cricket team at the World Cup in 1982. The fierce rivalry between the two cricket mad nations of India and Pakistan is clearly visible in the reference to Kapil Dev(Indian Team) and Imran Khan(Pakistani Team). Long after the victorious cries of the masses had died down, the silly song stubbornly survived in Naarth Indian schools, passed on by each generation of school kids to the next, and entertained them all during a boring ride in the school bus.

Spoof was always sung in the same tune as the original.

Usage

"Aao bachchon tumhe dikhayen
jhanki Hindustan ki,
Kapil Dev ne chhakka maara,
pant phatti Imran ki.

Vande Matrammmm!
Vande Matrammmm!"

Translation:

"Come kids we'll show you
a glimpse of India
Kapil Dev hit a sixer
and Imran split his pants.

Praise the motherland!
Praise the motherland!"

Some versions of the spoof continued with ridiculous phrases, like :

"Ice cream hai garammmm
pathhar hai narammm" etc

Kids those days would laugh heartily at just about anything. It was a simpler time.

You would not have enjoyed an Indian cricket telecast if you did not hear this moan by Nayan "Aai Ga" Mongia on every ball when Kumble was bowling..... Oh yes, some fans, would run away after the match ended with the stump microphones, in the grand belief that without it, they wont have to listen to it again.

But mere mortals like you and me, we use it convey anguish, despair, pity, empathy, emotions and what not....

And those who are the language police use it to call out their moms...
After all, it simply means "Mom...."

Usage

A cricket match is going on....
Kumble to batsman: no run, batsmen defending the ball on frontfoot with full face of the bat...
Mongia to stump "AAAAAAAIIIIII GGGGaaaa"

Raju: Ram bhau, waaat hapend??? wy u so sad
Rambhau: Locha.... Aai Ga... wat to do now...

LET COME, LET COME....

Such a colourful and melodic word that it has its own song in bollywood penned none other than Javed Akhtar.
Please refer to the smash hit, blockbuster song from Angaarey......

Akshay Kumar has sung and enacted this word's philosophical significance to the common man.... Even the origin of the word has been wonderfully explained right at the beginning of the song...

My apologies, but I could not do a better job than the lyricist Javed Akhtar and Music composer Aadesh Shrivastav.... Enjoy while you learn while you dance.....

Aaan Deee, Dekh Lenge...

The South Indian equivalent of 'Yeah right!!'. If you say something that is hard to believe or sounds ridiculous, you'll hear the Tamil word Aama (meaning 'yes' ) stretched and used this way - Aaaama. It is usually said in a flat tone and followed by a sarcastic statement.

Usage

Divya: Ayyo we're going to reach late man. I don't think we'll get tickets either..

Aparna: Will you just chill!!! We'll definitely get them.

Divya: Aaaama. Our thatha will be waiting for us with tickets on a golden platter no!
