Dak means the mail (snail mail) in some Indian languages.
So these were guest houses built near the old major routes of the country so that people and specifically the mail men (once considered very noble and respected gentlemen) could rest along their way.

So all old colonial towns have remnants of these places as towns grew around these bunglows to serve the gorra sahibs and memsahibs.
