The actual road itself was pretty small, you could walk down it in less than five minutes (Ess ess I am knowing there is one more Brigade Road, the second half is after crossing the petrol bunk on Residency. But you are forgetting Eva Mall, hotel-shotel and Coffee day was never there in those days, wokay!) Of course, any Bangalorean knows that the term Brigades is all encompassing and can just as easily refer to the surrounding areas of Residency Road, Church Street and Emgees. And sometimes even St. Marks Road.
Ah, to feel yeng and happy on a Saturday morning, to go to college just to meet with yuvargang, to bunk off Assembly language class yevery time and zoom off to Brigade's in one auto, to feel full eggzitement while rattling along in said auto at the prospect of a day of fun, laughter, food and one pikchur, to simbly loaf up and down ten times while making plans, to stand in line for gandhi stall tickets at Plaza/Rex/Galaxy/Symphony, to belt off one lunch at Bheema/Nilgiri's nest/Ullas/Chung Wah/KFC/Wenger's(yes all you Delhi bellies, we also had one). Then one stroll to Corner House to cake fudge or DBC, to watch off movie sitting ten feet from the giant screen while looking up almost at the ceiling (beats the best home theatre system I tell you), to giggle, snort and laugh at all the stupid comments yuvar gang would make, to somehow find place in tummy after all that food for eating messy corn pupps and then rub your hands clean using gal pal's dupatta (who told her to wear salwar kameez on Saturday aa?), to loaf afterwards up and down Brigades some five more times before having four rupiss filter, and then going home cos your folks would ground you if you stayed out too late.
On opportune weekdays, engsters would happily bunk college and zoom to Brigades for one nice drinking session at Purple Haze/Styx/Pecos/Guzzlers. Because it was on weekdays that all pubs would have flat 50% discount on all drinks (andrey for price of one weekend drink you could get two). Pub snakes were also very yum, and after getting full tunn engsters would totter off to Ullas for nice evening idli vada khara bhat to further absorb all the alcohol.
With malls springing up all over Bangalore like mushrooms on steroids, Brigades rapidly declined in popularity sometime in the mid 2000's as a weekend loafing destination. Also parking is big problem with too much traffic and too many persons now ya.
Engster 2 :"Brigades only da. Lord of the Rings is showing in Symphony, plus Chung Wah is having full new menu. Then nice filter at Ullas, what say?"
Engster 3 : "Ey no ya. Let's go off to Casa and have some pasta"
Engster 4 : "No da! Let's go to KFC and belt off one full chicken bucket!"
"baaro, brigades hoganna - ollay ollay colour barthadhe..."
