ABCDEFGHIJs are well known for having parents who, along with their entire extended family and friends, left the same village in Gujarat and, through various ports of call, made their way to New Jersey in the 1970s and 1980s. Where they have done their best to replicate village life albeit with modern amenities such as SUVs and wide-screen TVs. But whose channels are tuned to Indian channels - soap operas by day, the stock market and cricket by night.

American born confused Desi - someone born in the U.S but with parents from South Asia. Trapped between two worlds - neither FOBish enough for their parents nor Americanized enough for their classmates. Spends a lot of time hiding their true nature by allowing mispronunciations of their name, never inviting friends over, not talking about what they had for dinner, pretending they don't speak "Indian," talking smack about other Indians, trying to come off like a slacker, lusting after white women, etc.

Every Indian newspaper uses these three words in every article about robbery or theft - the "culprits" are always "nabbed" while "absconding" with untold quantities of valuables.

ABCD or American-Born Confused Desi has become a polarizing factor in the South Asian diaspora.Though the term was originally coined in reference to Indian-Americans, it has been adopted by the South Asian community at large.

The longer and lesser known form "American Born Confused Desi, Emigrated From Gujarat, House In Jersey" is also occasionally seen; playing on the alphabet theme, it has been expanded for K-Z variously as "Kids Learning Medicine, Now Owning Property, Quite Reasonable Salary, Two Uncles Visiting, White Xenophobia, Yet Zestful" or "Keeping Lotsa Motels, Named Omkarnath Patel, Quickly Reaching Success Through Underhanded Vicious Ways, Xenophobic Yet Zestful".
