Definition 1 of 1
While the word itself might mean any particular ruling entity in India, "Raj" by itself has come to be synonymous with the period of occupation by the British over the South Asian subcontinent. While the occupation extended decisively from 1857 to 1947, various parts of the region were under British rule even earlier in the 19th century.
"In most of these coffee and tea plantations, you will see several remnants of the Raj - not just in the architecture - but in the ways and habits of the people who live here. It will be a long while before we are able to shed these colonial trappings."
