When it is a wedding or a formal event that requires you to sit up and take note, we prefer to "solicit your presence" rather than merely extend an invitation to you. And this we do in writing, via a printed card, which (in the case of weddings) often resembles a medium size brochure, emblazoned with metalwork depicting deities, peacocks, elephants, coconuts in urns, and lotus flowers.
"Smt. and Sri. T. S. K. Iyer solicit your gracious presence at the wedding of their daughter, Sow. Meenalochana with Chi. John Dreyfuss (of USA)..."
