The definitive guide to South Asian lingo

Definition 1 of 1

Well known Indian face cream, with turmeric being it's main ingredient. Among it's claim to fame was it's ability to zap pimples into oblivion (due to the natural antiseptic properties of turmeric). It was therefore quite popular among engsters who suffered from acne. Young brides anxious to look their best on their wedding day also favoured this product. Though it seems to have lost it's stronghold on the urban Indian population in the last two decades, it is still pretty popular in smaller towns and cities.

Till recently, Indians were not fond of allopathic/Western medicines and ointments, and to label any commodity as having been derived from the ancient medicinal system of Ayurveda, was to find an instant market for it in the country. Vicco claimed to do just that.

The ads for this product were very popular in the 80's, and many a schoolkid could recite the whole jingle by heart.

One of the Vicco turmeric ad jingles :

"Vicco turmeric, nahi cosmetic!
Vicco turmeric ayurvedic cream.

Keel muhason ko jadd se mitaye,
haldi chandan ke gunn isme samaye,
twacha ki rakhsa kare ayurvedic cream!

Vicco Turmeric ayurvedic Cream!"
