Definition

A small flat box in stainless steel, aluminium, or even plastic for carrying packed snacks and a small meal to school and work. Much more modest than the “lunch box” of the well-to-do, lacking as it does handles, hinges, and divided sections, not to mention decals of cartoon characters in vibrant colours.

Usage

“See this tiffin box? I used to carry my lunch in it for years. Now I store my tablets in it. Very convenient.”

Preferred method of transporting breakfast or lunch to a South Indian. Has the amazing advantage of keeping the idli quite separate from the sambar until mixing is required

Arvind stole Nasir's tiffin-box, ate all his biryani except for the sapota which he left untouched.
