Families connected by the marriage of offsprings. Highly formalized mutual relationship, replete with behaviour dictated by custom and ritual. Also unequal in its traditional form, with the bride’s family required to defer at all times to the wishes, needs, and whims of the bridegroom’s family, which commands a higher status in every instance. In Tamil, the respective fathers of the couple are referred to as sambhandi, and the mothers, sambhandiamma.

“We have yet to buy the sambhandi dhoti .”
“What kind of sari have you bought for the sambhandiamma?”
“She says she would like a nine-yards sari. Not that she wears one on a regular basis, but she says she is going to dress in one at her son’s wedding.”
