Definition

An Arabic word used in English and almost all Indian languages.
The image of an Islamic cleric who interpreted Islam to the common folk and who always wore loose and comfortable plain clothes unlike the stiff and tight fitting 'uniforms' that the cadres of the police and British army wore extended the term to be used for the off-duty or spy-duty officers who were in comfortable civilian clothes.

Usage

" Oh! It's so funny these cops think that they can't be spotted by criminals if they are in mufti."

" Ask me why"

" Ok why? "

"Any child can pick them out even in a sea of humanity; what with their crew cut, lemon-moustache, the office issue boots and the very menacing look they carry even when they are smelling a flower!"
