A horata literally means a "struggle" or a "protest" in Kannada. The term is often used to describe a variety of political protests against state policies and is often used in conjunction with "samithi" meaning "committee" in Kannada.

See, over this Cauvery water issue we did one big horata also. We blocked the traffic. We cut the pipes. We pressurized those officials and told they must provide us with water.

The Mangalore-Bangalore Railway Horata Samithi will block the Mangalore-Bangalore train for one hour tomorrow.
