The word hero is used to mean a male protagonist in a story, especially a Bollywood movie. The protagonist need not have any specifically heroic characteristics.

In everyday parlance it is used to refer to anyone who is doing something out of the ordinary with a little bit of josh like cutting a traffic light in a yezdi.
