Schoolkids in India had two sources of knowledge - the street and the guide. The street taught them how to survive, the street taught them right and wrong, the street took no prisoners, the street made them strong. The guide helped them clear examinations without reading the textbook.

The guide was a book that simplified stuff from the textbooks, often into bad English, answered all the questions at the end of a chapter, printed and solved past years question papers, model papers, and the like. Terribly minimal, terribly functional.

Extremely useful for Sanskrit, Hindi and regional languages because one could read the entire story in simple English and then give out general gyaan in the exam.

"What men, studied a?"
"Yes, ya."
"From textbook a?"
"Mad or what. Diamond Guide only, men. Jobless a to read textbook-gixtbook and all!"
