Fist known usage in "The charge of the light brigade" by Tennyson. Also used by Mahatma Gandhi in his 1942 "Quit India" speech. He meant that he would die if he had to, to uphold his beliefs with action.
Do or die is a phrase used by several Indian politicians. Some need to definitely die, others need to definitely do.
