Definition

An envelope, often gaudily decorated, containing a cash gift. The cover is a common sight at wedding receptions, since most people bring cash despite the "Blessings Only" at the bottom of the invitation. The standard sum ends in 1 rupee (e.g., Rs. 1001, Rs. 501, etc.) so the cover will often contain a single note plus a single coin; many covers now come with the rupee coin embedded in a polythene window. In some sections it is acceptable to insert a business card into the cover, to remind the couple and their families of who gave how much while they tott up the total takings the morning after.

Usage

Sheelaben: Chaliye, Mukeshbhai, tamein ready chho? We are getting late for the muhurat... And pliss tamein cover nathi bhooljo! (Come on, Mukesh, are you ready? We are getting late for the auspicious wedding hour... And please don't forget the cover!)
Mukeshbhai: Haan, haan, cover maathi I have put Rs. 501, OK? That's what they had given for our Amit's wedding only. Chalo. (Yes, yes, I have put Rs. 501 in the cover, OK? Let's go.)
