Alphonso Mangos are the king of Indian mangos. The name conjures up images of succulence, saccharine heaven and being 12 again, taking a bite into orange burnished jewels of the great Indian summer. Honey and citrus and nectarine and saffron had a baby with the gods of butter to produce this voluptuous fruit.

Alphonso is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese adventurer and explorer who is said to have brought it to India. The name quickly became Hapus!

Today Ratnagiri in Maharashtra is the sacred abode for this regal fruit. Go there and scream "Haaaapuuus" with reckless abandonment!
