The mainstay of young school going childrens' comic book quota, an eagerly awaited issue of Tinkle would hit the stands every month. The more organized parents would have it delivered home, subscription style.

The host of regular characters that inhabit the pages of Tinkle are forever sealed in our memories, and for the more disturbed among us they form a recurring menagerie through our dreams even today.

Usage

"Brother, I didn't sleep one bit last night, re! What mad scenes were playing in my head, one reel only. Shikhari Shambu had married my mum and Chamtaka and Doob Doob were the priests! I was tied to my bed and Suppandi was sweeping the floor singing some blues song when a trap door opened above the ceiling fan and Tantri the Mantri started throwing jelebis at my head..."

"Pah! Reading too many Tinkles in school aa?"

A monthly comic book of humorous stories, some of which are reader-submitted. Many of the stories are stand-alone tales, while others feature one of several popular characters. Characters such as Suppandi and Kalia the Crow teach children the value of education, as well as the Indian notion that "you're either born clever, or you're born dumb."

For ABCDs on quadrennial visits to India, a chance to stack up on the latest issues of Tinkle was one of the highlights of their visit. It was also one of the few times an adult bought something for them without their parents' protestations.

Following the price of Tinkle over the years is an excellent way to see inflation trends in India. When the magazine launched in December 1980, an issue was 2.50 Rupees at the newsstand. As of June 2011, the price was 30 Rupees, a 12x increase over 30.5 years.

Usage

"Uncle, can you give me a ride on your scooter to buy the latest Tinkle?"

Ironically, NOT number one. Rather, a sweet nostalgic Amar Chitra Katha publication that taught children common sense using animal tales and farming wisdom.

Usage

Raja: Arre! I want to go into this shop to see one Tinkle.
John: Uh, I don't think I want to see that.
Raja: Come, da. I'll show nice pictures.
