Used to describe pious persons in voices of hushed awe; a supposedly desirable trait in elderly persons, in direct contrast to iconoclasts like Khushwant Singh.

Usage

"Thatha is such a God-fearing man!" or even "that gardener, I tell you! So penniless, yet so God-fearing! He brings me flowers from the Shiva temple every day. I tell you, India has a rosy future after all."

Definition

In India being "god-fearing" is supposedly a desirable quality for children and adults to have second only to being "obedient." Propagated by priests in Jesuit high schools like St. Josephs.

Also common to list oneself as "god-fearing" in matrimonials.

Usage
