A saree (sari) that is 9 yards in length as opposed to the more popular 6 yards. The way you drape a 9-yard is drastically different and somewhat more complex than its shorter counter part. You tend to end up trussed quite securely and wrapped like a package in no immediate danger of undermining its modesty. Consequently and not surprisingly the longer safer garment is more traditional to the South of India.
