The definitive guide to South Asian lingo

"We are like this only", a catch phrase that was almost the brand name of "Samosapedia"! And for good reason, because we are indeed like this only. Like what you ask? Peruse our WALTO compendium to find out more… it's rather difficult to explain in one pithy para, sort of like our very own Desi head nod. Yes, no? There are times when we must simply throw are hands up and say WALTO. That’s what this category is all about.

The most probable cause and effect assigned by Indians to bad fortune (picchle janam may main ne kuch kiya hoga, is liye aaj bhugatna pad raha hai) or that the effect of a misdeed will definitely be reaped in the next janma (agle janam mein woh gadha banega), since in this janam you are making merry despite your corrupt ways. This is one way we Indians console ourselves when things don't go the way we want them to or when we can't explain why things happen a certain way. Variations are found in every language. Phrase is also used to show humility when you accomplish something great (Hindina janma da punya irbeku, adakke IIT Exam nali first bande, and friends will go "what a humble guy" and nod approvingly). This thinking is deeply rooted in the Hindu belief of Karma and Rebirth but most Indians of every religion probably believe in it.

Usage

Toone us kutte ko accident mein maar diya, agle janam mein tu kutta banega.
Mai apne pichle janam ka kiya bhugat raha hoon.

Definition

Typical Indian euphemism for Roadside Weigh Stations. Literal translation is "righteous duty thorn". Dharam Kaantas are found scattered along highways where "lorries" ferrying goods are weighed. In actuality the Kaanta refers to the pointer on the scale on which weighing is done. Weighing of commercial vehicles is for the purpose of collecting road use tax, so one can imagine what the righteous duty thorns, i.e. weigh station workers, would be doing here. Wink wink, nudge nudge, pay me a few and I'll declare your lorry underweight, dharam jaaye bhaad mein.

Usage

Dharam Kaanta - belonging to Pistol Singh of Gram Rewari, very reliable and honest service.

It's a sound on Indian TV.
So by mistake you switch to a "serial" on TV expect this sound to fuck your ears repeatedly. Apparently when something dramatic is happening there is a need to pan to every characters face in the story and play this sound while they "act".
Very much loved.
Can be used when you want to bring drama in to your mundane boring gay real life.

Usage

Anal Bondhopadyay - Sorry Sags, I don't think I can live with you anymore. You are just boring and sad. You bring no joy and just carry around a sense of misery and dullness about you.

Shagorika Kundoo - Hey, I'm cool man. I know you are fucking that 60 years old maid. I'm anyways in love with the newspaper-wallah and we are moving in together.

Paneerselvam - DHIISHH!!!

Little finger

The savior of many a kid's half-pants, and a susu-distressed kid's best friend. We all have seen little kids in primary school classrooms, who will squirm in their seats, do the twist, have a pained expression on their face, until they can no longer hold the pressure, and voila, the left hand goes up with the raised little finger, while the right hand clamps down on the front of the half-pant in a last ditch effort to avert a flood of biblical proportions. Once permission is granted by the miss, the kid is off to the races, where relief is just a smelly pot away. The raised little finger is the desi symbol of no. 1, the supposedly more benign cousin of no. 2, since no. 1 can be done anywhere where there is a willing wall.

Usage

Tot: Miss, Miss, I have to go to the bathroom. I am getting little finger.

In India, we don't need Zombie movies to fuel our inner - macabre selves. We have the living dead. Quite literally. These are people biologically alive but legally dead. The way it works is that people can pay off corrupt gorement officials to "declare" other people dead; at which point they execute some ghastly and mercenary plan such as seizing their land etc.

If this is not absurd enough, its very hard to prove that you are alive once dead! Showing up to court and acting alive won't help. For example, there was a guy called Lal Bihari who after being "dead," tried all methods of proving his "aliveness" such as running for parliament, getting arrested, threatening to murder people, doing sussu in public etc. and only after 18 years did "dead" status get revoked!

After winning his case, he decided to emancipate other alive dead people and went on to found the Association of Dead People ("Mritak Sangh" in Hindi). To be a "Mritak" therefore is to be one of these people.

Usage

Rohan: I see dead people
Lal Bihari: That is correct!
