The definitive guide to South Asian lingo

The desi relationship with money and business is complex, to say the least. A kaaka shop of some kind (call it what you will) lurks somewhere on the street corner. Some members of the junta have black money; despite not paying taxes to the gorement, some might still act like a Kanjoos Makkhichoos, always looking for the cheap and best option in life.

When times are hard, we grow a money plant. When times our good, we give money garlands to show affection. And at all times, we are ready to give one tight slap and say "Money Doesn't Grow on Trees" to our children who will inevitably spend their pocket money on one extra pink tuck, only to then do namaskaram and get the money back from unsuspecting grandparents.

We give money to our policemen to grow mustaches (Stache for Cash). The same policemen protect us when we are duped and made to feel like Tirupathi Laddus! Sometimes, the state fails us, as she is too busy fighting or colluding with spectrum rajas.
There are lurid myths about those that sell their kidneys for money (Kidneyvakkam). Spend your single naya paisa with care.
Money, like power, always croreupts.

Typical Indian euphemism for Roadside Weigh Stations. Literal translation is "righteous duty thorn". Dharam Kaantas are found scattered along highways where "lorries" ferrying goods are weighed. In actuality the Kaanta refers to the pointer on the scale on which weighing is done. Weighing of commercial vehicles is for the purpose of collecting road use tax, so one can imagine what the righteous duty thorns, i.e. weigh station workers, would be doing here. Wink wink, nudge nudge, pay me a few and I'll declare your lorry underweight, dharam jaaye bhaad mein.

Usage

Dharam Kaanta - belonging to Pistol Singh of Gram Rewari, very reliable and honest service.

For many Indians, after spending several grueling years in Tuitions and IIT-JEE classes, success = getting on an Air India plane and going to Amreeka or the Gelf only to earn money and send it back to their loving ammas who will proudly say "from where to where" my little beta has gone. This proclamation of maternal pride is typically made over some hot celebratory gajar ka halwa!

Historically, usurious companies like Western Union, MoneyGram and/or banks would help with the movement of this money; oftentimes charging exorbitant prices. The money would also arrive on IST.

Xoom is a disruptive cross-border money transfer or remittances company that makes it fast and cheap for Indians abroad to send money to India. They are have gained so much traction that they now have Big B dressed up in a blue velvet jacket, supporting the brand.

Usage

"I recommend Xoom" - Amitabh Bachchan

Used to be short for Qayamat Se Qayamat Take , the 1988 Amir Khan film. Mysteriously co-opted by the SENSEX following Indian business community who now use the the acronym to stand for 'Quarter se Quarter tak' which means surviving from quarter to quarter. Could also stand for the short-term focus and the drive to maximize shareholder value at the cost of long-term strategic planning. So basically its QSQT when Kapitalism's invisible kai goes up the skirt of mother India and makes her myopic.

Usage

"Even as investors pummeled the stock back to its $14 listing price, Kalra in an interview stoically takes refuge in Bollywood-speak. “Life is QSQT … quarter se quarter take,” he says, using the popular acronym for the iconic romance film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (From Resurrection to Resurrection)."

It is supposed to be a combination of the English letter R and Devnagri letter र.
There was full competition and all for designing the symbol and as it happens in competitions some IIT guy won and we got this symbol.
Just like we in India believe that we deserve a permanent place at the UN Security Council, we have other aspirations too. Main one being that the world take us seriously, which is a hard sell in it self, what with bollywood trumping everything.
So in our pursuit of seriousness, we needed a symbol for the rupee and we got one.

Usage

Bata Manager to all bata pricing workers - Behen chodo! Gather around, apparently the government has decided that writing Rs. or Re. is not good enough in our pursuit of seriousness and has come up with this symbol ₹, so that we can gain some credibility. So go unbox all the shoes and change the tags with new ones which says ₹. And remember, what do we say at bata?

Bata pricing workers in unison - point nine nine is better than point zero zero!!!!
