The definitive guide to South Asian lingo

If you want to understand us desis, look no further than the products and brands we use and extol. Smiling when you hear tell of gold spot or thumbs up or maggi or mango duet or even driving around in an amby? We consume domestic brands with pride and jingoism (Gandhi once famously said "be indian, buy indian"). We love our biscuits (see Parle G) as much as we love our homegrown desi whisky (see Peter Scott) and our soft khadi half pants!

However, this is not to say that foreign brands have not laid their prehensile grip on the desi psyche. The wealthy lap up amreekan brands the way a Tambrahm inhales curdrice in the afternoon (quiz question: what do wealthy Tambrahms from foreign inhale?). Sometimes western taste goes into a Videocon Washing Machine and comes out as a safari suit on a naughty indian uncle with an attache!

Our ad industry is so creative that one of the most popular high school activities during a cul-fest is to parody major ads (see mad ads). Sometimes we go too far -- heard of the Ford Figo fiasco?

This category is dedicated to products good and bad, mad and rad. Enjoy this page. And come back often. Bye bye, Tata!

Most people erroneously assume there are only 3 gold standards for shoe sizes as marked on most foreign shoes: European (36,38,40,42 and all), US (8,9,10,11), and Landan (-1 of Amreeka sizes).

But there is a 4th. There is a 4th...

In the seething backwaters of a proud and barefoot nation there is a carefree sizing policy that brings to the world the equally ubiquitous "Bata Size". It bears no linear relationship to the other three gold standards mentioned, and takes no cue from principles of standardization for that would play neatly into your expectations.

Every desi has an intuitive and experiential knowledge of their Bata Size. And that is all that matters.

Usage

Sofasadhu1: "Do you know that dollar, pistol and robot are the only English words that come from Czech?"
Sofasadhu2: "Ah, no no no mister! Bata is also a english word, and it is decidedly a Czech origin company you must agree"
DiligentMummy2: "Uff, forget all that! Speaking of Bata have you purchased Munna's shoes? School opens in two days!"
Sofasadhu2 (meekly): "Not'ett kanna, sorry..."
Sofasadhu1: "I say, my fellow is older by 2 years, what is your boy's Bata Size?"
DiligentMummy2: "Canvas Shoes 6. Black shoes 5. Lace ups 5 and half. Rubber chappals 7. If this man would be kind enough to collect it today itself we can wash and keep them ready for opening day."
Sofsadhu1: "No problem. I'll send some kiwi white polish also."

The brown Milton plastic water can was once a sight so common in all the picnics of yesteryears. Yes, beautiful things made of cheap but sturdy turtle-shell hard plastic. The constant companion of yevry intrepid toorist and school students. But the blasted things were too small and never carried enough water.

Usage

I was rummaging through the junk in the store room yesterday when I found my old MIlton water can I used to take to every school picnic. Milton — always in perfect working condition but the plastic strap fastener is always the first to break, makes it hard to carry it around that way.
